What is it?

A program to clean up caching areas

The Cache In Trash Out (often written as C.I.T.O. or CITO) program is a special program encouraging geocachers to clean up the areas to, from, and around caches.

Description

"Cache In Trash Out is an ongoing environmental initiative supported by the worldwide geocaching community. Since 2002, geocachers have been dedicated to cleaning up parks and other cache-friendly places around the world. Through these volunteer efforts, we help preserve the natural beauty of our outdoor resources!"[1]

The C.I.T.O. program is often practiced during special C.I.T.O. events, though geocachers are encouraged to engage in CITO whenever they are geocaching. You can also buy C.I.T.O. trash bags from various Geocaching vendors. A common swag item found in larger geocaches is a 35 mm film canister labeled CITO on the side, with a small trash bag stuffed inside.
